The Daigneault News
weeks #25 & 26 March 8, 2019
Trimester 2 has officially come to an end and we are in the final part of the school year!
Students in our class have been wrapping up their opninion writing and started a mini “Edit Unit”. Students have been writing a variety of responses to Dr. Seuss or Cooper and Packrat books. Our favorite piece by far is: “Who or what has inspired you to…”. This idea was based off a trip Dr. Seuss once took on a ship. Ask your second grader what he heard from the ship’s engine that made him think about writing! Second graders are using their pieces and going through the stages of editing.
Reading Workshop happens daily! Your child has a variety of “good fit” and high interest books in their book bag. Students shop weekly for new books that are easy to read to practice fluency, “good fit” to practice skills/strategies and challenging to go above and beyond. Students also record their books and minutes read. In addition to reading students have the ability to use the comprehension cubes with their texts. Comprehension cubes are an excellent tool to help students think about the text, think within the text and think beyond the text. The teacher has a special job during Reader’s Worshop too. The teacher’s role is:
A.) The teacher checks in with a few students daily and may ask them to read while she does a quick running record or listens to see what skills/strategies the child may need to focus on.
B) The teacher takes one or several students at a time at the reading table and focuses on a particular skill/strategy.
The student’s role is:
A.) The student gets their books and nooks and begins reading! The students reads the entire time without interruption UNLESS the teacher sits next to them and asks them to read or has a mini discussion about their reading.
B.) The student may use their comprehension cubes and Interactive Reading Notebooks to record responses.
WANTED! We have chair arm pillows for students to use on the floor. We are in need of 4 more for everyone to have one to use. If you can help us that would be wonderful! We also need baby wipes too!
Thank you to all those who have sent in gifts and supplies! We greatly appreciate all you do!
Homework logs #22 went home this past Tuesday due to the snow day on Monday! Homework is due on Monday! If your child misplaces their log just record minutes read on a piece of paper.
Student-Parent-Teacher conferences are happening this month! Your child brought a sign up sheet home last Thursday, February 28. If you haven’t signed up please send in the form or contact me as soon as possible. My goal is to meet with ALL students to share their strengths and weaknesses so everyone can be on tthe same page.
Winter is here! All students go outside every day UNLESS the temperature is below 16 degrees or it is raining. PLEASE remind you child to bring their gear even if it looks like foul weather. You never know what the weather will be like in Maine! It can be raining one minute and sunny the next! Students MUST have boots and snowpants to play in the snow. This is a P.C.S. rule. Students should also have a winter jacket, hat, scarf and mittens. Some recess days are very chilly but still warm enough for recess! We want all children to be warm and safe during the chilly winter months. If your child has extra snowpants, boots or sneakers to keep at school they may. They may store their gear in their cubbies. SNEAKERS are a must for gym class on Wednesdays! Also, students should have a pair of sneakers/shoes to wear in the classroom so their feet don’t overheat.
Homework packets are sent home on the first day of the school week and are due back the following first day of the week. If there is a holiday, workshop day or snow day homework is scheduled that week. Homework during vacations only will be optional!
Please check your child’s Weekly Tote (white folder with the blue paw print) for weekly papers. Please remove the papers and return the tote to school. This week your child tote should have the following news from the classroom: weeks #25 & 26 newsletter
We have a snack break every morning upon arrival. Please make sure your child has a healthy snack and drink.
Cooler weather is approaching and your child will need to dress appropriately. Please send layers of clothing with your child so they can adjust, as the days get cooler or warmer.
Students have gym class on Wednesday. Please send sneakers and appropriate dress.
Toys and electronics are not permitted in my class unless they remain in the students’ school bag. It is the responsibility of the student if a toy/electronic is lost or damaged.
Each week a different student will bring home a plastic portfolio box labeled “Mrs. Daig’s Star Student”. It will be sent home on Fridays and returned on Mondays. Your child may fill the portfolio box with items that pertain to him/her. Students are asked to bring items/pictures of items to school that are meaningful like a postcard of their summer trip to Hawaii, a piece of rose quartz from a quarry they once visited, or a favorite doll that someone crocheted. Items will be shared throughout the week and returned home on Friday.
Again, I look forward to working with you and your child. Please contact me with any questions or concerns.
