Week #23 February 9, 2018
Congratulations to Jaxon as our February Student of the Month! Way to go!
Also, congratulations to all my readers! Students have been focusing on reading and making at least one year’s growth. Students should be reading at a level “L” by March. If your child isn’t at the expected level “K”/“L” at this time think about their starting level! Students that are below or above the targeted level have made gains! Just keep in mind where they started! If your child is above the “K”/“L” target “N”/“O”/“P” (grade 3 levels) they may not move as quickly through the levels but their focus is reading comprehension. If your child is not quite on target for this point in the year focus on the Rebecca Sitton Grade 2 word list that was sent home earlier this year. Also, focus on short and long vowel words. If you would like ideas to help your child please let me know.
Math coins are needed for math activities. There are a few students who don’t have coins for math activities. Using real money is helpful so please (if possible)make sure your child has the following coins for their math tool kits: 20 pennies, 20 nickles, 20 dimes, and 10 quarters.
Homework is due on Monday, February 12! Homework packet #18 will be sent home on Monday, February 26, 2018 AFTER VACATION and due the following Monday. If I don’t send home a form please use a piece of paper. In addition to the reading log students will bring a set of reading comprehension cubes home. Please help your child construct the cubes and use them as part of the daily reading routine to help with the follow up discussion to reading. I went to the Dollar Tree and purchased the large foam dice to wrap the paper cubes around. Then I used packing tape to secure the paper dice to the cube. Mine have lasted for several years! The comprehension cubes are an excellant way to check your child’s comprehension on what they have read. The questions not only focus on questions and answers you could find in a text but they go beyond the text and offer some higher level thinking. Happy reading!
Valentine’s Day is Wednesday, February 14th! Our class will pass out Valentine’s Day cards and have a small snack. If you would like to send something in you may. We are in need the follow items: paper plates, paper cups, paper napkins, plastic spoons/forks, drinks, a box of gallon size baggies to send extra food home in, and small snacks. We have 19 students. Also, students will need to bring in a decorated Valentine’s Day box. Last year my kiddos made “Monsters of Love” monster boxes. If your child would like to participate and create a box that would be great. If not, I will provide a bag to store cards. Happy creating! I’m excited to see some cool monsters!
