The Daigneault News
Week #1
Welcome to second grade! We have been very busy getting to know each other, learning about our school behavior matrix and our new routines.
The first few days were spent sharing, modeling, practicing, and role playing rules from our school behavior matrix. The behavior matrix will be taught, retaught, modeled and role played over and over throughout the school year. We also kicked off our year with a bus lesson at our Morning Meeting on Friday and shared examples and modeled how we can be safe, respectful and responsible on the bus.
We also did some getting to know each other activities and games like “123 ABC” where students had to find a classmate with the named characteristics. Later in the week the class did another getting to know the teacher activity! The entire grade 2 team also met this week to do some fun team building activities too! Ask your second grader what activity they did with a hula hoop and how teamwork was an important part!
Second graders also talked about classroom community and what we want to live by that highlighted our school rules: Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Safe. A smaller version will be sent home in your child’s weekly tote.
This year we have a lot of new and exciting things planned and I hope you and your child will have a great learning experience.
Each week you will receive a copy of “The Daigneault News” which will inform you of classroom activities, upcoming events, homework information and school news. You may also visit my school website for information too!
I will do my best to inform you of special dates as far in advance as possible. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me.
Every Friday your child will bring a weekly folder home with important school news. Please remove the contents and return the weekly folder to school on Monday. If you have lunch money or an important note please label and place the item/s inside the weekly folder. This will ensure that I receive important information.
I have implemented the Home-School folder this week as well. If your child needs a folder please let me know. Daily papers and notes are placed in the folder. It would be very helpful to label all student property since children have similar items.
Your child’s work will be scored based on a rubric that coincides with your child’s report card. Please see the enclosed grading rubric.
Students will also have homework in second grade. Students will bring a weekly reading log and math assignment home every Friday. Logs will be due the next Friday. More information will follow with the logs.
We have a snack break every morning upon arrival. Please make sure your child has a healthy snack and drink. Due to allergies, please refrain from sending in peanut/tree nut products.
Cooler weather is approaching and your child will need to dress appropriately. Please send layers of clothing with your child so they can adjust, as the days get cooler or warmer.
Students have gym class on Tuesday. Please send sneakers and appropriate dress.
Toys and electronics are not permitted in my class unless they remain in the students’ school bag. It is the responsibility of the student if a toy/electronic is lost or damaged.
A schedule will be sent home for the “Star Student of the Week”. Each week a different student will bring home a plastic portfolio box labeled “Mrs. Daig’s Star Student”. It will be sent home on Fridays and returned on Mondays. Your child may fill the portfolio box with items that pertain to him/her. Students are asked to bring items/pictures of items to school that are meaningful like a postcard of their summer trip to Hawaii, a piece of rose quartz from a quarry they once visited, or a favorite doll that someone crocheted. Items will be shared throughout the week and returned home on Friday.
Again, I look forward to working with you and your child. Please contact me with any questions or concerns.
