Dear Second Grader,
Hello from Mrs. Daig’s fabulous second grade class! I am super excited to have you in my class next year. I have a fun filled educational year planned with some new and exciting learning!
We will do some getting to know you activities and games the first week to get to know our new class. We will also create our classroom constitution of classroom rights that are a good fit for our class.
As we grow through the year we will transform into creative authors, scientists, explorers, mathmaticians, readers, teachers, and learners. I hope you are as excited as me to take an exciting journey into second grade!
I’ll be sending a welcome back letter mid summer so be on the look out! In the meantime congratulations on taking the big step into second grade and have a fabulous summer!

Dear Super Duper 2nd Grader,
Congratulations and welcome to second grade! As a second grader it is very important to continue practicing math, writing and reading through the summer months to prevent the “summer slide”. I have a summer homework challenge to sharpen your skills!
For each day of summer (or whatever you choose)choose one or more days to write number sentences and/or number stories, look at an analog clock and tell the time, show various ways to show money, write and/or explain to someone your math reasoning after solving a math problem, practice your grade 1 & grade 2 sight words, practice handwriting, practice editing (capital/lower case letters, spacing, proper punctuation, spelling), write complete sentences, READ and discuss the book- ask questions how you might relate to the book or character, and read books to practice fluency.
These are some things you can do if you would like to sharpen your skills over the summer. This is optional homework. If you choose to complete even one thing is a great start!
Remember to include some summer family fun too! Enjoy your summer and I’ll see you at the end of August!
Love,
Mrs. Daig
